Fool Me Once (Netflix Series 2024)

4 Kernels Stars: Michelle Keegan, Adell Akhtar, Richard Armitage, Joanna Lumley, Emmett Scanian and others Gosh, it seems strange to type “2024,” but nevertheless, here we are in a new year with plenty of shows coming our way. Today, before my current Netflix subscription ends, I watched Fool Me Once. I don’t keep Netflix year-round, but I only subscribe when something noteworthy is on that I want to see, such as The Crown and other series. I’ve canceled and will pick it up again when Season 3 of Bridgerton returns, or sooner if something else catches my eye. So, through lunch, dinner, and popcorn,…

The Gilded Age (HBO Max 2022 & 2023)

4 Kernels Stars: Carrie Coon, Morgan Spector, Cynthia Nixon, and Christine Baranski It appears during my lull in writing that I watched Season 1 of The Gilded Age but never wrote a review. Well, as a period drama junkie, I naturally sucked it in like a breath of fresh air with Julian Fellowes’s pen behind the storyline. If you haven’t watched The Gilded Age and like gorgeous dresses, outrageous hats, jewels, and tiaras, the rich upstairs, and the working class downstairs, I encourage you to stream it. Just pay the fee and cancel afterward. It works for me. The Gilded Age is Julian…

The Crown (S6-Part 2) Netflix 2023

2 Kernels I’ll make this short rather than belaboring the end of this series that was brilliant and award-winning for many years but sputtered out into eternity at the very end.  If you haven’t watched Part 2, you can expect the first few episodes to be 2-Kernel experience again as they delve into the post-Diana years with William and Harry dealing with her demise. The first episodes are heavily focused on William, coping with the anger of her death, blaming his father, and finally coming through all the stages of grief, arriving at acceptance. Strangely enough, there is very little about…

Archie (BritBox 2023)

4 Kernels Stars: Jason Isaacs, Laura Aikman, Jason Watkins, Harriet Walter, Henry Lloyd-Hughes Today, I took the opportunity to finish watching Archie on BritBox, the “true story” about Archibald Leach from Bristol, England, who became the infamous Hollywood star known as Cary Grant. It’s a look into his life from childhood until he died, taking the audience on a journey from his humble beginnings to his successful career as a movie star. The story is a bit jumpy as it starts with Cary Grant on stage in his elder years when he was touring the country doing sit-down talks with audiences.…

The Buccaneers (Apple TV+ 2023)

1 Star The Actors/Characters:Kristine Froseth as Nan St. George; Guy Remmers as Theo the Duke; Aubri Ibrag as Lizzy Elmsworth; Alisha Boe as Conchita CloseImogen Waterhouse as Jinny St. George; Josle Totah as Mabel Elmsworth; Matthew Broom as Guy Thwarte I haven’t been as disappointed in a period drama since Reign. This one tops the charts in awfulness, with only a 2.5 viewer rating on Apple TV. Of course, this could be a generational-influenced review since I’m not of the giddy, screaming age of teenagers as portrayed in this series. Nevertheless, it’s not the noise, music, terrible costumes, etc., that…

Leave the World Behind (Netflix 2023)

2-1/2 Kernels Starring: Julia Roberts, Kevin Bacon, Ethan Hawke, Maherhala Ali, Myha’la Leave the world behind, sit in your recliner, and spend the next 141 minutes watching a doomsday movie that will, at times, make you wonder, make you worry, or make you bored. The ending will cause you to throw your empty popcorn bowl at the television screen. Meet Amanda and her husband, Clay. Amanda wakes up and suddenly decides to take an unplanned vacation to Long Island by renting a mansion and spiriting away her husband and two children for the weekend. She wants to leave behind all…

The Crown S6 (Netflix 2023)

2 Kernels Stars: Imelda Staunton, Dominic West, Jonathan Pryce, Elizabeth Debicki Last evening, I watched the first four episodes of Season 6 of The Crown. I previously reviewed Season 1, Season 2, and Season 4, giving the Netflix Series a resounding 4.5 kernels to 5 kernels each time. One must admit that the series, earlier in its creation and airing, was a masterpiece, well deserving of the many accolades from Emmys, Golden Globes, Screen Actors Guild, and others. In fact, it even has its own Wikipedia page to list all the nominations and wins. It remains to be seen if…

World on Fire S2 (PBS 2023)

3 Kernels Stars: Julia Brown, Lesley Manville, Jonah Hauer-King, Zofia Wichlacz, Mark Bonnar, Ahad Raza Mir World of Fire premiered in 2019, and you can read my review from season one. CLICK HERE. Then the pandemic hit, and it’s taken until 2023 to release season two. A few characters have dropped off this season, including those played by Helen Hunt and Sean Bean. A few new ones have arrived to bring us newer themes. My initial complaint from season one continues in season two. The series is not simple. There is a considerable cast of characters spread across the globe…

Payback (BritBox Original 2023)

3 Kernels Stars: Morven Christie, Peter Mullan, Derek Riddle, Jack Greenlees This week, I finished watching Payback. It started with a bang, but I felt like it ended with a whimper. Nevertheless, it did have some tense moments, and I couldn’t help but feel for Lexie Noble, the central character caught between a rock and a hard place. Meet Lexie, a mother of two, married to an accountant named Jared. Unbeknownst to her, one of her husband’s clients happens to be a crime boss by the name of Cal Morris. He’s really not a nice guy, and neither are the…
